When you are a Biotarian, you try, as much as possible, to only consume organic or sustainable food.
Organic or sustainable food contains qualitatively higher levels of essential minerals (such as magnesium, calcium and iron), that are severely depleted in chemical foods grown with pesticide and nitrate fertiliser-abused soil.
Because of an abundance of scientific research that demonstrates the health and environmental benefits of an organic diet, even governments recommend sustainability productions. An estimated 70 percent of all diseases, including one-third of all cancers, are related to diet. An organic diet reduces the risk of chronic degenerative diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary artery disease and certain types of cancer.
Organic food production has been around for thousands of years and is the sustainable choice for the future. Compare to this, the modern agricultural practices are destructive to the environment through the widespread use of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and fertilisers and have resulted in drastic environmental damage in many parts of the world.
Organic food doesn't contain pesticides. More than 400 chemical pesticides are routinely used in conventional farming and residues remain on non-organic food even after washing. Children are especially vulnerable to pesticide exposure. Pesticides are linked to asthma and cancer. One class of pesticides, endocrine disruptors, may be responsible for early puberty and breast cancer.
We prefer quality over quantity, and we buy food with respect, respecting the worker, the aliment, our body and our mind. Indeed we prefer to buy organic, sustainable, fair trade, local and seasonal products.
An important value when you are Biotarian is to eat only organic or sustainable animals production. We refuse to eat animals from intensive production, in order to respect the animal quality of life. We exclude eating baby animals, in order to respect the natural life cycle.
Organic animals are respected and aren't given drugs. Choosing to support farms that treat the environment and the animals they raise in an ethical manner, is a very positive way to support local, sustainable and organic farms in your local community. You will also support the larger community of which we are all a part. Additionally, the animals are raised without cruelty.
Organic farming standards prohibit the use of antibiotics, growth hormones and genetically modified vaccines in farm animals. By eating animal products raised on such farms you provide the healthiest choice for your family and support the farms that support healthy and ecological neighbourhoods.
As a Biotarian consumers, we can and do make a difference through the choices we make. By choosing sustainable seafood, for example, we take a step towards a future with healthy oceans by helping drive change in the way our fish and shellfish are caught or farmed. We can all help make our consumption of seafood sustainable.
